Richard Hugh “Richie” McCaw (born 31 December 1980) is a New Zealand rugby union player who is now the test captain of the All Blacks – the country’s national rugby union side. He was born in Auckland, New Zealand, and grew up in Wellington. He mostly plays the openside flanker position for the New Zealand, Crusaders, and Canterbury teams, although he has also played the blindside flanker position and the number 8 position with his previous teams. A crucial element of McCaw’s game is his ability to anticipate play and adjust to the referee’s decisions. He is widely regarded as the best openside flanker of all time, and his ability to do so is one of his most defining characteristics. He grew up in rural South Canterbury before relocating to Dunedin in 1994 to attend Otago Boys’ High School as a boarding student. As a result of his selection for the national under-19 squad while studying at Lincoln University in Christchurch in 1999, he relocated to Christchurch. After that, he represented the Under-21s and Canterbury in the National Provincial Championship (NPC), before making his Super Rugby debut with the Crusaders the following year in the National Provincial Championship. Despite having just eight minutes of Super 12 rugby under his belt, he was picked for the All Blacks’ end-of-year trip in 2001. His international debut for New Zealand came against Ireland, when he was named man of the match. He went on to be named as the All Blacks’ first choice openside flanker for the 2003 World Cup in England. McCaw established himself as a regular selection for New Zealand, missing just a few games as a result of recurrent concussions. He was selected captain of the All Blacks in 2006, and he guided them to victory in the 2007 World Cup. The squad’s leadership came under fire when they were eliminated in the quarterfinals, but he was retained and subsequently guided the side to victory in the 2011 Rugby World Cup. It was during McCaw’s tenure that Canterbury claimed five national championships (later known as the ITM Cup). During his time with the Crusaders, they also advanced nine times to the Super Rugby semi-finals, winning the championship on four occasions. It has been seven Tri-Nations crowns, three Grand Slam tours, and eight Bledisloe Cup victories since he made his debut for New Zealand. It was in 2010 that McCaw reached the milestone of 100 Super Rugby appearances, equaled the previous record of 94 test appearances for his country, and became New Zealand’s most capped All Black captain, having captained the team in 87 test matches, making him the most capped test captain in the sport’s history.
